Her Story
From personal frustration to becoming Ireland's leading senior trails specialist
The Beginning: 2010
Síle's journey started closer to home than most outdoor experts realise. Her own parents were reaching retirement age, and they wanted to stay active — walking, exploring, enjoying Ireland's natural spaces. But here's the thing: they couldn't find reliable information about manageable walks near Dublin. The resources that existed were either too vague or designed for experienced hikers. Frustrated by this gap, Síle decided to do something about it.
Building Expertise: 2010–2015
She pursued a degree in Environmental Management at University College Dublin, combining her passion for nature with systematic knowledge about land use, conservation, and recreation planning. But she didn't stop there. Síle completed specialist certification through the Irish Mountain Leader Board, focusing specifically on outdoor recreation for older adults. This wasn't just academic — she was spending weekends documenting actual trails across Phoenix Park, testing gradient analysis, checking surface conditions, identifying seating availability, and noting seasonal considerations that matter to adults over 45.
Growing Impact: 2015–2019
Over the next four years, Síle became deeply involved with retirement communities across Cork and Galway. She wasn't just recommending trails — she was conducting mobility assessments, designing bespoke itineraries, and walking alongside older adults to understand what actually works in the real world. She learned that gradient matters less than people think; what really matters is consistency. She discovered that perceived safety (how a trail feels) is just as important as actual safety. And she realised that social connection — walking with friends, finding accessible seating for conversation — often matters more than distance covered.
The Milestone: 2019
In 2019, Síle published 'The Senior Explorer's Guide to Irish Parks'. It wasn't a glossy travel book — it was meticulous, practical, and honest. Over 40 retirement organisations have since adopted it as their official trail guide. But more importantly, thousands of older adults have used it to reclaim their confidence in exploring their own regions. That's what drives her.
Today: Content Leadership at justrod
Síle now leads content strategy for justrod Limited's outdoor recreation division, combining her 14 years of field expertise with evidence-based research on senior health and mobility. Every trail review she writes still includes that same meticulous attention to detail — gradient analysis, surface conditions, seating availability, seasonal considerations — because she knows these details actually change whether someone feels confident enough to explore. She doesn't write about trails generically. She writes about specific walks for specific people at specific times of year, based on real experience with real older adults.
